Powder coating of ‘Heat-Sensitive Substrates’ : the chemistry yesterday, today and tomorrow. For a long time powder coatings have been seen as an excellent, cost effective, environmentally friendly coating for metal, but not suitable for heat sensitive substrates such a plastics and wood. Coating such heat sensitive substrates is considered the holy grail for powder. The technical challenges are great, especially reduction of the curing cycle. In the last decades several attempts were made to powder coat on MDF, with challenging results at best. This presentation will discuss the history of powder on MDF from a chemical point of view and the recent technical and commercial breakthrough in powder-cure technology by DSM.
