Glas en glasvezel
Samenvatting
De voordracht behandelt de belangrijkste aspecten van het materiaal glas. Na een korte inleiding omtrent de historie en het belang van glas voor de huidige maatschappij zal de aandacht gericht zijn op de industriële productie en gebruik van glas in Europa en Nederland. Breed wordt ingegaan op fundamenteel materiaalkundige aspecten die tot het inzicht leiden van het veelzijdig toepassen van glas als materiaal: transparantie, vorm en mechanische eigenschappen. Dit betreft onder andere de structuur en het smelten van glas, het belang van het “louteren” en ontwerp en bedrijfsvoering van glasovens. De verschillende productietechnieken voor industrieel glas komen daarbij ook aan de orde.
Vervolgens wordt dieper ingegaan op glasvezel als essentiële component voor composieten: veelzijdige materialen die nieuwe ontwikkelingen en toepassingen mogelijk maken en traditionele materialen kunnen vervangen op basis van een palet van potentiële eigenschappen en een betere eco footprint voor de volledige levenscyclus. Tenslotte wordt de toepassing van glasvezel voor internetverbindingen besproken.

Recent functions: Director Science and Technology, Europe PPG Industries Fiber Glass BV. Associate Director, Thermoplastics, Fiber Glass, PPG Industries: Global R&D responsibility for PPG’s products and processes for thermoplastic applications, chopped strands in general & long fiber reinforced thermoplastics.
Retired per August 1, 2015.
Current activities: Chairman working group Sustainability, AVK Industrievereinigung Verstärkte Kunststoffe e. V. (Federation of Reinforced Plastics) since 2009.
Chairman EuCIA (European Composites Industries Association) Sustainability Committee and project leader for the EcoCalculator Project since 2014.
Fields of Experience: Several managerial and technical functions in Science and Technology as well as Manufacturing at PPG in Europe and US 1983 – 2015: fiber glass product and application technology, composites, fiber glass manufacturing, glass melting.
Active member national and international institutes, working groups and branch organizations in relation to beforementioned roles.
Variety of Conference Papers, Articles on Sustainability of Glass, Fiber Glass and Composites, Patents, contributions to scientific books.
Memberships & Awards: Member of the Advisory Board TNO-TPD since April 1998 and since 2006 till 2010 of the Strategic Advisory Board of TNO’s Industry and Technology Division. Member Board and Secretary VNG, Vereniging van Nederlandse Glasfabrikanten (Association of Glass Manufacturers in the Netherlands), for 12+ years till Q1 2015. Member of the NCNG, National Committee Dutch Glass Industry, since 1990, and chairman from January 1994 to January 1997 and as of 2002 till 2015. Chairman NCNG, National Committee Nederlandse Glasfabrikanten (National Technical Committee NL Glass Industry) for 12+ years till Q1 2015. Chairman of the international ESG conference on Glass, Maastricht, 2012.
