Drying and aging coatings exhibit a wealth of complex yet fascinating phenomena. Visualizing the internal dynamics governing these phenomena is, however, intrinsically difficult because the dynamics are typically heterogeneous and span a wide range of time scales. Moreover, the high opacity of commercially relevant paints precludes conventional imaging techniques from reaching deep inside the film layers. To address these challenges, we use a novel microscopy technique, Laser Speckle Imaging (LSI), as a versatile and quantitative tool to elucidate the hidden dynamics in paints, with nanometer resolution and spanning seven decades of time. Combined with a toolbox of analysis and image processing methods, this allows a tailored investigation of virtually any coating, regardless of the chemistry, geometry and substrate. We complement our LSI results with well-established methods including light and electron microscopy. We will show how this approach enables us to shed new light on a variety of phenomena related to paints, ranging from the open time, to film formation, chemical reactions, barrier properties, edge effects, substrate interactions, coalescence, cracking and crack healing. We will thus be looking beneath the surface of coatings, to paint a new and dynamic picture of their drying.
Slav Semerdzhiev obtained his PhD degree in 2016 at the University of Twente under the supervision of Prof. Mireille Claessens and Prof. Vinod Subramaniam, studying the physico-chemical aspects of pathological protein self-assembly. Currently he is a Postdoctoral researcher in the Physical Chemistry and Soft Matter group at Wageningen University, where he is taking a new look at the dynamics behind the drying, film formation and mechanical failure in waterborne colloidal films deploying Laser Speckle Imaging as a novel approach to unravel these rather complex phenomena. Slav’s current efforts are focused on expanding our fundamental understanding of these intricate processes and harness this advancement in knowledge to tackle emerging industrial challenges, such as the development of sustainable waterborne coatings.
Hanne van der Kooij obtained her MSc degree cum laude at Wageningen University in 2013, after a research project in the Physical Chemistry and Soft Matter group and an internship at the University of Cambridge. She is currently in the last year of her PhD at Wageningen University, where she works on understanding drying and film formation in colloidal coatings using a variety of techniques, under the supervision of Dr. Joris Sprakel. Hanne’s ambition is to contribute to a more sustainable and liveable world by providing relevant new insights based on her research. One of her main aims is to advance the development of high-quality, water-based coatings, for example by developing and applying new measurement techniques that allow her to look beneath the surface of paint films, where the human eye cannot see.
